Holy shit, guys.

If you’re a retro gamer, this brand new retro-inspired game just might be what you need to play! I recently discovered this lovely little indie title, called Castle in the Darkness, on Steam for about $6. I’d seen some screens and videos of it, so I wanted to give it a shot. I also wanted to mess around with figuring out settings for streaming PC games, so everything seemed to be lining up quite well! I streamed this game in its entirety as a blind 100% run on our Twitch channel over the last 5 or 6 days.

Anyway, playing this game has been an absolute blast! It draws from the classics and throws in a lot of awesome references, but doesn’t outright rely on them for the gameplay to be solid. The difficulty curve is nearly perfect, and the world is vast…Castle in the Darkness is a Metroidvania title at its core, so there’s plenty of backtracking and branching pathways to investigate. Sometimes these lead to gigantic new areas, and sometimes they just open into a room with a callback to Monster Party.

Check this video out, and if you like what you see, be sure to check out the rest of the series (which will be coming out slowing over the next while) and/or buy the game for yourself on Steam! Trust me on this…it’s fantastic!
