I was recently inspired by a discussion on whether or not The legend of Zelda was a role-playing game to take a closer look at the genre and how it’s defined. From table-top inspired computer role-playing games to JRPGs, to newer action-RPGs, each one approaches the idea of playing a role differently. What kinds of mechanics and character developments are crucial to the genre? Is it really the best way to describe such a wide variety of games?
